Here is some of the guts of O8: Playing Marginal Hands. Before the flop, I have a pretty crappy hand. But on the flop I catch middle set in the BB, so what to do? I am very likely to have the best hand right now. But there are no prizes for best hand now - I need to make it to the river with the best hand. I have significantly more equity here than my opponents. But, there are many hands that can outdraw me. My middle set when the set is pretty low (6) and is vulnerable, but against this many opponents I'm getting good odds to continue.

So I check to start with. I do this because my hand is not that strong. If there is a lot of action, I will proceed very cautiously and perhaps even fold.

When it comes back around, I raise, for several reasons:

  1. My primary purpose for raising is information. I want to find out if I'm up against QQ or an A235 type hand that has me in bad shape. If the initial raiser reraises here then I must strongly consider folding (unless its heads up).
  2. My secondary purpose is to try and drive out any higher pairs. My set has a decent chance of holding up if no higher pairs stick around. Here, I want all pairs 77-AA to fold, and I want 35xx type hands out as well.
  3. Lastly, my equity here with 4 opponents must be higher than 20%, so I'm raising for value, even tho its quite likely I must fold before all is done on this hand.

** Dealing Turn ** [ T ]
BigFish checks.
Hero bets [$4].
AverageJoe calls [$4].
SomeDude calls [$4].
RandomGuy calls [$4].
BigFish calls [$4].

The turn is a blank and can't have helped anyone, so I bet out for value here. If I'm raised, I have a tough decision, as it means a A2TT hand is likely out, or perhaps a QT hand.

** Dealing River ** [ 5 ]
BigFish checks.
Hero checks.
AverageJoe bets [$4].
SomeDude folds.
RandomGuy calls [$4].
BigFish calls [$4].
Hero calls [$4]

Now a low and 3 straights are all possible (23, 37, 78). So I clearly must check, and fold to lots of action. However, all 3 of those couplings are likely to be folded preflop, so its still possible I could win.

It comes around with no reraises, so I have an easy call. And I win high.

AverageJoe shows [ A, 4, 2, 9 ] a pair of fours.
AverageJoe shows 6,5,4,2,A for low.
RandomGuy shows [ 8, 5, 2, A ] a pair of fives.
RandomGuy shows 6,5,4,2,A for low.
BigFish doesn't show [ J, A, 3, K ] high card ace.
BigFish doesn't show 6,5,4,3,A for low.
Hero shows [ 2, 7, 6, 6 ] three of a kind, sixes.
Hero shows 7,6,5,4,2 for low.
Hero wins $32.5 from the main pot with three of a kind, sixes.
RandomGuy wins Lo ($16.25) from the main pot with 6,5,4,2,A.
AverageJoe wins Lo ($16.25) from the main pot with 6,5,4,2,A.
kjelle has left the table.
