Starting Hand in Omaha 8/b Poker
Roughly in order, here are the most valuable starting hands. Note that W stands for wheel card (i.e. 2-5), and H=high card (i.e. T-K)
If you are relatively new to Omaha 8, then stick to these starting hands.
Any AA2 or AA3
1. AA with a 2 or a 3 are the super-premium hands in omaha 8, comparable to KK/QQ in hold'em. It's important to note that there is no equivalent monster like Holdem's AA in omaha 8.
Any A2
2. A2xx. Play any hand that has A2 in it.
A3 Plus a little something
3a. A3s xx Play any hand that has A3 where the A has another card of the same suit in the hand
3b. A3Wx. Play any hand that has A3 if you have another wheel card.
3c. A3HH. Play any hand where A3 also has two high cards in it
AA Plus Something
4a. AAWx. Play any hand with AA where X is a wheel card
4b. AAHH Play any hand with AA where it has two other cards T-K
4c. AAssxx Play any hand with AA where both aces are suited. AA is overrated in loose low limit games, and a trouble hand.
4 High Card Hands Plus Something
5. HHHH Play any hand where all 4 cards are A-T that are ALSO a) double suited, b) single suited with a pair, c) double paired
23xx Plus A Lot
6. Play 23xx if xx are both wheel cards and single suited. 23xx is a trouble hand.
That's it. Just those hands. Until we get to advanced play.
